American Electric Power Foundation Donates over $1.3 Million in College Scholarships to Horatio Alger Association
Teens in Eight Additional States to Receive Scholarships for Overcoming Adversity
WASHINGTON, July 13, 2010 – The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is pleased to announce that the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation will be supporting state scholarship programs in Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and West Virginia to give 79 students the opportunity to attend college. These teens have persevered in overcoming adversity while demonstrating excellence in academics, admirable character and community contributions.
The Horatio Alger State Scholarship Programs range from $2,500 to $10,500 and are sponsored by Horatio Alger members and friends. The generous three-year commitment from the AEP Foundation will expand Horatio Alger’s state scholarship program to 31 states.
“We are thrilled to partner with the AEP Foundation, which will allow us to expand our reach throughout more states,” said Terrence J. Giroux, executive director of the Horatio Alger Association. “Deserving scholars from eight more states will now be able to attend college and achieve the American dream.”
The AEP Foundation strives to improve the quality of life on the communities where AEP, its operating units and employees live and work. The AEP Horatio Alger scholarship program provides each scholar with $5,000 to assist in funding their college education at a school of his or her choice. 79 scholarships total will be awarded each year and divided by state: Arkansas; 7 scholars, Indiana; 10, Kentucky; 8, Michigan; 15, Ohio; 16, Oklahoma; 8, Tennessee; 9 and West Virginia; 6.
Horatio Alger scholars are provided with numerous resources to ensure a successful college career. Each student receives:
- Financial aid guidance to assist in the selection of, and preparation for, college.
- Access to the association’s Web site, where students can create online profiles, search for fellow scholars, update their personal information, submit disbursement requests and direct questions to the association.
- Access to a toll-free information line, to speak to program coordinators for assistance with questions about their scholarships and other educational programs.
