Kay E. Baker of Hurst, TX is Appointed to Horatio Alger Field Director Network
Local Educator Selected to Represent Association

(June 26, 2008 – Washington, DC) – The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is pleased to announce that it has appointed Kay E. Baker of Hurst, TX to the position of Field Director in Texas. Horatio Alger Field Directors are education officials or community leaders representing all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, who serve as liaisons between their respective state and the Association, one of the largest need-based financial aid programs in the country.
“By identifying top individuals in our local communities to serve as Field Directors, they become a true extension of our organization,” said Terrence J. Giroux, Executive Director of the Horatio Alger Association. “We are, therefore, confident in each of these directors to appropriately represent our organization to schools and to provide student referrals for our scholarship programs.”
Horatio Alger Field Directors assist the Association with marketing and recruitment at local schools. They provide the necessary information regarding the types of scholarships and educational programs offered, including all details on criteria and eligibility. Their objective is recruiting the best and brightest students for the Horatio Alger scholarship programs. By promoting the Association’s unique opportunities within their community, they generate interest among educators, students and their families.

Kay worked in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District for 38 years, retiring in 2004. Having taught art for several years, she later served as interim principal and assistant principal for 25 years at L.D. Bell High School. Kay was also the District’s Public Relations Officer and later the Director of the Pat May Center, the district’s professional development center.  She has been involved with the Horatio Alger Association since 1984 saying: “It is a privilege to serve the Horatio Alger Association as a Texas Field Director. I feel most fortunate to be able to assist our youth both in Texas and throughout the country.”

Field Directors serve a two-year term, which is renewable, and there are no limits on the number of terms that can be served.

The 60 newly-appointed Field Directors will gather in October 2008 in Williamsburg, VA at a national conference, where they will share best practices and strategize for future recruitment.
