On August 1-4, 2014, the Horatio Alger Association and its Alumni Advisory Committee hosted the 4th Alumni Summit in Chicago, IL. The theme of the Summit was “The Road to Success” reflecting the Association’s commitment to the personal and professional growth of its Scholars. Horatio Alger National and State Scholar Alumni, ranged in age from the mid-20s to the mid-40s and hailed from all regions of the country, shared stories of perseverance and achievement; heard words of wisdom from renowned speakers; and participated in workshops about financial planning, life and professional skills, and career pathways. Alumni also discussed the progress of the Alumni Association since the 2010 Summit and set new goals for the organization as it continues to grow and gain momentum. The Horatio Alger Association inspired Alumni to pursue their own paths to success and raised awareness about what it means to be productive citizens of our nation and the world.
The Summit took place in conjunction with a State of the Association meeting and special concert at the historical John B. Murphy Memorial Auditorium. The concert featured Shelley MacArthur, renowned Chicago vocalist and Life Partner of Association Board Member William F. Farley, and George Perris, international classical/pop crossover tenor and Horatio Alger International Ambassador. Mrs. MacArthur and Mr. Perris were accompanied by Chicago’s Rich Daniels, musical director, and The City Lights Orchestra. State of the Association meetings are organized throughout the United States and Canada in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Horatio Alger Association’s scholarship programs. These meetings provide a unique opportunity to unite Horatio Alger Members and Scholars and share information about the mission of the Association.
