Omahan David Sokol, chairman of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., has been named president and chief executive of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. The Washington, D.C., association presents college scholarships and recognizes people who have succeeded in spite of adversity, encouraging young people to attend college. Sokol has been a member of the association since 2004 and its executive vice president for the past two years. Walter Scott Jr., former chairman of Peter Kiewit Sons' Inc. of Omaha, is chairman emeritus of the association.

MidAmerican Energy's David Sokol has begun a two-year term as president and chief executive of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. Sokol, 51, steps down as MidAmerican's chief executive this month but will continue as chairman of the Des Moines-based utility that's owned by Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway. It was reported last month that Sokol, who lives in Omaha, is one of four Berkshire managers mentioned as candidates to succeed Warren Buffett, 77, as Berkshire's chief executive.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans said Monday that William Austin, CEO of Starkey Laboratories Inc., has won the 2008 Horatio Alger Award. The organization said that Austin, who grew up in Missouri, funded for his pre-med studies at the University of Minnesota by making ear molds for a hearing-aid dealer in Minneapolis.
