CHS senior wins national scholarship

This is the time of year when we start to learn of scholarships being awarded to local graduating seniors. Any scholarship is significant and a tribute to the recipient's dedication and study habits. But one in particular announced so far deserves special mention

Cole Burns, a senior at Sevier County High School and a Kodak resident, has received one of the $20,000 Horatio Alger National Scholarships. The scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc. was awarded to 104 students from across the U.S.; only two recipients were from Tennessee. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate courage in overcoming personal obstacles to gain academic success.

Samantha Feemster was planning on attending University of Alaska Fairbanks next year. Now she’s thinking of applying to Baylor, a private research college in Texas. The Seward High School senior has more options, thanks to a $20,000 Horatio Alger Scholarship. Over 35,000 students applied for the 2009 national award. Feemster was the only Alaskan recognized.

Two Johnson High School students get $20,000 scholarships

Moua, his six siblings and parents moved into a one-bedroom apartment with his uncle's family. Mohamed, his mother and two sisters were homeless. Now, both are seniors at St. Paul's Johnson High School, and their plans for college got a huge shot in the arm last week when they learned their struggles to overcome adversity had earned them each a $20,000 scholarship from the Washington, D.C.-based Horatio Alger Association.

Benavides, Coleman receive Horatio Alger National Scholarships

Two very special young people received an incredible piece of news this week – they had each been chosen out of thousands of applicants nationwide to receive $20,000 scholarships to help fund their college education. Kyle Coleman, 17, of Upper Lake, and Laura Benavides, 18, of Nice, received word Tuesday that they were among 105 recipients of the scholarships, offered by the Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program.

Graduate overcomes Cerebral Palsy, wins national honors

Joshua M. Neace's determination to overcome Cerebral Palsy has made him his school's valedictorian, and the first Northern Kentucky student ever to be selected a national Horatio Alger Scholar. Neace received the Scholar designation, and the $20,000 college scholarship that goes with it, at a black tie banquet where the 108 recipients were met by trumpeters wearing tuxedos in Washington D.C. in April.

On Sept. 10, 2001, Autumne White moved into a group home with her seven brothers and sisters. History was made the next day, but the White family had more immediate problems. They had been pulled from their home to escape an abusive father, only to be placed in a home for juvenile delinquents where they were mistreated. Their parents separated and later divorced and the children moved back in with their mother.

The Staten Island Tech senior was the only Intel Science Talent Search finalist in the city, he won the New York Times College Scholarship and the Albert Shanker College Scholarship, and he is being followed around by a documentary crew making a film called "Whiz Kids." Two Berlin High School seniors have won prestigious national scholarships. Kendra A. Parent beat out 35,000 applicants to be named a 2007 Horatio Alger National Scholar, which carries a $20,000 scholarship. Arielle Arsenault was named a national winner in the 2006-07 Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program, which carries a $1,000 scholarship.

He had just finished meeting with an attorney in Springfield, giving a statement relating to a custody dispute between his mother, Danna, and his father, Greg. Ryan was about 14 at the time.
