Eleverado Student Awarded Life-Changing Scholarship

An Elverado High School senior was awarded a life-changing scholarship this year that will allow him to chase his dream, despite the adversity he faced in his life. Robert Johnson, 18, received the Horatio Alger Scholarship, which will allow him to attend college, something he says he would not have been able to do otherwise.

Graduate overcomes Cerebral Palsy, wins national honors

Joshua M. Neace's determination to overcome Cerebral Palsy has made him his school's valedictorian, and the first Northern Kentucky student ever to be selected a national Horatio Alger Scholar. Neace received the Scholar designation, and the $20,000 college scholarship that goes with it, at a black tie banquet where the 108 recipients were met by trumpeters wearing tuxedos in Washington D.C. in April.

A journey that began in Vietnam recently took Toan Do to the steps of the Supreme Court. "I have gotten to do and see things that most people only dream of," said the Salem High School senior. "This is like a dream come true for my whole family." Do, 18, was awarded the 2008 Horatio Alger National Scholarship, which is geared to students who have overcome adversity through perseverance and basic moral principles.

Mark Georgacopoulos, a senior at Oyster Bay High School, is one of 108 students nationwide to recently receive a $20,000 scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, an organization honoring those who have overcome adversity. Georgacopoulos was selected from more than 36,000 entrants.

Hermain Khan has won a lot of awards. The Staten Island Tech senior was the only Intel Science Talent Search finalist in the city, he won the New York Times College Scholarship and the Albert Shanker College Scholarship, and he is being followed around by a documentary crew making a film called "Whiz Kids." But he believes that one award stands out: a $20,000 scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, given to students who overcome adversity.

Kera Package faced a wonderful opportunity blanketed in a dilemma: to simultaneously be in two places to receive national scholarships. But for the Charleroi Area High School senior who has overcome adversity throughout her life, it was a challenge that provided a lifetime of opportunity. The dilemma Package faced in was how to be in Washington, D.C., to accept the Horatio Alger Scholarship and in Atlanta to accept a Coca-Cola scholarship during the same week in mid-April. Attendance is necessary to accept each scholarship.

Two Berlin High School seniors have won prestigious national scholarships. Kendra A. Parent beat out 35,000 applicants to be named a 2007 Horatio Alger National Scholar, which carries a $20,000 scholarship. Arielle Arsenault was named a national winner in the 2006-07 Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program, which carries a $1,000 scholarship.

Ryan Courson, a senior at Williamsville High School, remembers stepping into his mother's Ford Expedition sometime in January of his freshman year. They were on their way to one of his high school basketball games. He had just finished meeting with an attorney in Springfield, giving a statement relating to a custody dispute between his mother, Danna, and his father, Greg. Ryan was about 14 at the time.

Duane Carver's life sounds like a road map for a dropout. He, his sister and his divorced mom were homeless for a time. At one point they lived in a car. They were given shelter in an unheated church and later lived in a rodent-infested house. But Carter laid out a plan and stuck to it.

On Sept. 10, 2001, Autumne White moved into a group home with her seven brothers and sisters. History was made the next day, but the White family had more immediate problems. They had been pulled from their home to escape an abusive father, only to be placed in a home for juvenile delinquents where they were mistreated. Their parents separated and later divorced and the children moved back in with their mother.
