L&G student receives national scholarship

BRATTLEBORO -- A Leland & Gray Union High School graduate is one of five Vermonters to receive a scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.

The Alger association announced last week that Thomas Pentoney, a 18-year-old from Windham, was a recipient of the scholarship. This is the first time the association has offered state scholarships in Vermont.

7 Top of Utah students awarded Horatio Alger scholarships

Overcoming adversity, KHS grad succeeds

Today, the 2010 Kingsburg High graduate is enjoying her first year at Fresno Pacific University. Shipman earned several scholarships toward her education including a $4,000 Horatio Alger Association award. She was among 40 students in California to achieve the honor. The association recognizes students who have succeeded "in spite of adversity." Shipman certainly has done just that. "My mother was an alcoholic. I had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and I wasn't taking my medicine," Shipman says. "I didn't like the who I was when I was on it. I wasn't focusing in school.

Seaford senior Nguyen named Alger Scholar

Seaford High School senior Tuyet-Nhung R. Nguyen was recently selected as a 2010 Delaware Horatio Alger Scholar and was nominated for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. She also took first place for the Business Professionals of America State Competition and the Science Olympiad Competition. Horatio Alger Award recipients are dedicated community leaders who demonstrate individual initiative and a commitment to excellence. The scholarship of $5,000 will help Nguyen achieve her goal to become a family practitioner. Nguyen has served in the National Honor Society as an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Commended Student. She was also the recipient of the $6,000 Michael C. Ferguson Achievement Award and $25,000 as a Scotch-Brite Family Dollar Scholarship Grand Prize Winner.

Carl Smith has overcome obstacles.  The 2008 Tioga High School graduate isn't wealthy and doesn't even have a car.  He takes the city of Alexandria bus wherever he goes. Carl works and worked a job to 1 or 2 a.m. most of his senior year in high school.  The teen once walked from his Alexandria home to a public transportation bus stop, caught a bus to the old Pineville Wal-Mart and then walked to Tioga High School during standardized test week. He had missed the bus but knew he had to get to school for testing.
