Local Student Earns Horatio Alger Scholarships

Carl Smith has overcome obstacles.  The 2008 Tioga High School graduate isn't wealthy and doesn't even have a car.  He takes the city of Alexandria bus wherever he goes. Carl works and worked a job to 1 or 2 a.m. most of his senior year in high school.  The teen once walked from his Alexandria home to a public transportation bus stop, caught a bus to the old Pineville Wal-Mart and then walked to Tioga High School during standardized test week. He had missed the bus but knew he had to get to school for testing.

As Wilson Lenhart walks the halls of Moody High School, he seems to know everyone. One teacher describes him as pleasantly gregarious.  Those who know him say he has many friends because he genuinely cares about other people, whether it's being supportive during high school drama or giving work advice to a friend. His support of others and academic achievement while facing his own challenges have earned him a $5,000 Horatio Alger scholarship.

Autumn Simonsen, 18, daughter of David and Maggie Simonsen of Wayne, a senior at Wayne High School has been named a 2007 Horatio Alger Association Ak-Sar Ben Scholar. The award comes with a $2,500 cash award. She was one of only 100 students awarded in all of Nebraska and portions of Iowa.
