New Members Inducted


The Horatio Alger 2008 Members were inducted in a formal ceremony at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in our nation's capital on Friday, April 4, 2008. This year, ten outstanding individuals were invited to be Members for their contribution to society as unique and determined Americans. From aviation to law, government consulting to the frozen food market, biofuels production, to financial management to hearing aid technology, the 2008 class represents a variety of sectors and industries. Their life stories of overcoming adversity and achieving success were detailed in video diaries and remarks at the podium. View the photos of each Member as each received his or her Horatio Alger Medallions from a current Member of the organization in an awe-inspired evening filled with stories of achieving the American Dream.

H. Wayne HuizengaH. Wayne Huizenga accepted the 2008 Norman Vincent Peale Award April 4, 2008 by Mr. Joseph Neubauer, Justice Clarence Thomas and Mr. David L. Sokol for his exceptional service to the organization over the years.

Named for the Association's Co-founder, the award is the Association's highest honor and is presented each year to a Member in recognition of his or her ongoing involvement in the Association, outstanding humanitarian contributions to society and service as a role model of courage, tenacity and integrity in the face of adversity. Huizenga overcame adversity at a young age, and was determined to work hard. He started his career early by founding his own garbage truck business. Eventually he co-founded Waste Management acquiring 100 smaller businesses in nine months.

During his career, Huizenga founded or co-founded Waste Management, Blockbuster Entertainment, Boca Resorts, AutoNation, Republic Services and Extended Stay America. He also owns the Miami Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Huizenga has held several positions within the Association including President and Executive Vice President. He sponsors the Florida State Scholarship program that provides funding for high school seniors attending college. He is currently Chairman Emeritus and serves on the Horatio Alger Board of Directors.
