- When is the deadline for submitting applications?
Applications will be accepted June 15, 2008 through September 1, 2008. Applications will not be accepted after September 1, 2008. Completed applications will be processed at that time. - I missed the deadline. Can I still apply?
Applications for the 2008 Round 7 military scholarship will not be accepted after September 1, 2008. - Is there a fee to apply?
No. There is no fee to apply for the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship. - Are paper applications accepted?
No. There is only an online application. - Are essays required?
Yes. You will be asked to respond to three essay questions. The first will require you to explain how you are planning to fund your college education. The second will ask you to share about your experience serving in the Middle East. The third will ask you describe your duties in the Middle East and how they were supportive of Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. - Do I have to be a United States citizen to apply for a scholarship?
Applicants are required to be a U.S. citizen. - When are the winners notified?
If you are selected as a scholarship recipient you will be notified in the fall of 2008. We will post the names of the scholarship recipients on our website. Recipients will be contacted by e-mail and postal mail. Only recipients will be notified. - If I am awarded the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship, how do I get my money?
Disbursement information will be sent to you upon the awarding of the scholarship. The Horatio Alger Association will send a check directly to your college or university to be credited to your account. Scholarship funds may only be used for tuition and fees, on-campus room and board, and books. - Can I use the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship at any college and for any program of study?
The funds may be used at any accredited institution in the United States where credits can be earned toward a bachelor's degree. Certificate and two-year programs do not qualify. The scholarship may be used at a community or junior college for up to 60 hours of degree-applicable coursework. - I am not currently enrolled at an accredited institution. Can I still apply?
Yes. However, you will need to be enrolled at an accredited institution by the following semester/term in order to receive scholarship funds. - I am pursuing a Masters or Doctoral degree. Am I eligible to apply?
No. The Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship Program is reserved for those who are pursuing a first bachelor's degree. - I am on active duty. Am I eligible to receive the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship?
If you served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom since September of 2001, you are eligible to apply. However, you must be enrolled at an accredited institution in the United States within one year of being awarded the scholarship. < - I served in Operation Desert Storm. Am I eligible for the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship?
No. The Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship will be awarded to those who have served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning September 2001 or later. - I served in Afghanistan or Iraq but was not in combat. Am I still eligible?
Yes. As long as you served in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom since September 2001, you are eligible for the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship. - I received an other-than-honorable discharge from my last tour of duty. Am I eligible to receive the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship?
No. Your service must be fully honorable in order to qualify for the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship. - Will I be eligible if I apply without submitting the required documents?
No. You must submit photocopies of the required documents to be eligible. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. - I receive education benefits through the Montgomery GI Bill. Am I still eligible for the Horatio Alger Military Veterans scholarship?
This depends upon the amount you receive from the GI Bill and the cost of your education. You are eligible to receive this scholarship if the cost of your tuition, fees, and books exceed the amount of your GI Bill benefits. As the Association awards its scholarships on the basis of financial need, veterans who are receiving total funding of their college education under Chapter 31/vocational rehabilitation do not qualify for this scholarship. - Will my high school grades or GPA have any impact on my eligibility?
No. The application does not require information about your high school work. - Where does funding for the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship come from?
The scholarship is funded through the generosity of the Association's Members, Lifetime Partners, and friends. - Am I eligible to receive other Horatio Alger scholarships?
No. The Horatio Alger Association's other scholarship program is reserved for high school seniors. - Are there other scholarship programs that I may be eligible for?
Yes. We suggest that you visit the financial aid office of your college or university. You may also search the scholarship database at www.military.com for scholarships pertaining to military personnel.
